A Rogue Librarian's Reading List

{December 27, 2013}   The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate

oneandonlyivanPlot: Ivan is a gorilla who has spent much of his life in a small mall circus off the I-95. When a new baby elephant is brought in, he knows that he has to save her from the life he has lived. But he fears that his artistic talents may not be up to the task.

This is a quick read (I read it, I confess, between questions at the reference desk on a single busy day) and an engaging one. It is told from Ivan’s point of view and Applegate does a good job of capturing his gorilla’s voice without anthropomorphizing him more than necessary. It’s a very touching story, based on a true one, and beautifully executed with adorable illustrations.

I was reminded of Charlotte’s Web and I think that it will eventually earn the classic status that White’s book enjoys.
