A small week. I don’t seem to have much time for reading, or writing reviews, lately.
Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Search part 1 by Gene Luen Yang
- This is the second comic series following the Avatar: The Last Airbender cartoon. It follows one of my favorite characters, Zuko, and his search for his mother and the secrets of her past. Yang perfectly captures the characters’ voices as well as the sheer fun and adventure that characterizes the series. I cannot wait for the second part, due out in July!
The Olympians, volume 5: Poseidon: Earth Shaker by George O’Connor
- O’Connor continues his brilliant Greek mythology comics with the story of the lord of the sea, or rather the stories of his sons. We get the cyclops Polyphemos and the hero Theseus (who defeats the minotaur), both monstrous in their own ways. He also explains the long standing feud between Poseidon and his niece Athena. Unlike the 4 previous volumes, this one is narrated in the first person from Poseidon’s PoV but it works quite well. This wasn’t my favorite of the series but there is something deep and interesting about O’Connor’s Poseidon. Next will be Aphrodite.
Orange Chocolat, volume 4 & 5 (French) by Nanpei Yamada
- Chiro catches the eye of Ritsu’s director. He decides to cast her as Alice alongside him. But she has also caught the attention of the famous singer, Hal, for whom they are filming the music video. Not only is he interested in Chiro but, unlike even their family and friends, he can tell that the two childhood friends are switching bodies. It’s nice seeing Chiro gaining confidence in these volumes and the romantic tension is building up. I’m curious to see where this goes next.
