A Rogue Librarian's Reading List

{January 29, 2012}   Comics and manga of the week (24)

About Love by Tomo Ootake and Narise Konohara

  • The awkward romance between a male wedding planner and his first client: a man stuck in a sham marriage with a lesbian woman who he secretly loves.

Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Promise, part 1 by Gene Luen Yang

  • I’m a huge Avatar fan (although don’t mention the live action movie in my presence) so I was excited about the very existence of this comic, and the new TV show it promises. Gene Luen Yang was a perfect choice to write it. He captured all my favorite characters perfectly.

GTO, volume 5 & 6 (French) by Toru Fujisawa

  • Onizuka continues to help students in his own unconventional ways but in order to keep his job he must now take a national test alongside them and outscore them all. I was laughing 2 pages in.

Mr. Convenience by Nanase Yamato

  • A jack-of-all trades gets a strange request to be friends with company director and falls in love with him. Lots of romantic misunderstandings and sexy scenes. A fun read.

Only Serious About You, volume 2 by Asou Kai

  • This is a really sweet BL romance about a single father and the man who falls in love with him. Added bonus: the daughter is really cute.

Le Pacte des Yokai, volume 11 (French) by Yuki Midorikawa

  • Natsume is a boy who can see spirits and monsters. This power has isolated him all his life but he finally has a family and friends. This volume goes back to explore more troubled times in his past. This series is published in English as Natsume’s Book of Friends.

Princess Jellyfish, volume 2 (French) by Akiko Higashimura

  • Kuranosuke, the cross-dressing son of a politician, helps Tsukimi and her otaku friends to save their boarding house and interact with the world. Meanwhile he struggles with his growing feelings for her. Still love it. Volume 3 can’t come too soon.

Private Teacher, volume 2 by Yuu Moegi

  • I can do without possesive, manipulative men, in BL or straight romances. But if you don’t mind that sort of thing, the art is nice and it is kind of hot.

Secrecy of the Shivering Night by Muku Ogura

  • This collection of bl romance stories is absolutely adorable. I kept going awwwww.

Storm Flower by Runa Konjiki

  • A rather confused plot with a cast of barely differentiated characters. Plus I can do without another fictional boy who’s gay because his mother slept around. Pass.
