A Rogue Librarian's Reading List

{November 18, 2011}   Earwig & the Witch by Diana Wynne Jones

Plot: Earwig grew up in the orphanage and she does not want to leave: everyone there does what she wants. But one day despite her best efforts she is adopted by the witch Bella Yaga. Bella Yaga plans to use her as a slave, as she does her familiar Thomas, but Earwig has other plans. And Earwig always gets what she wants.

This was the last book that Diana Wynne Jones finished before her death and I have been eager to read it. It is a short book, meant for younger readers, but it has all the things that make her longer novels great: magic, evil adults, wit and a hero who revels in her flaws (in this case her bossiness). It is absolutely charming.

The illustrations are hilarious and perfectly compliment the text.

It breaks my heart that there will be no more Diana Wynne Jones novels. She was a true master of fantasy.
