A Rogue Librarian's Reading List

{September 7, 2011}   The Poison Eaters by Holly Black

Plot: A collection of short stories about faeries, vampires, devils, werewolves and all things magical, each with their own particular twist. Fantasy as only  Holly Black can write it.

This is a nice little collection with some real gems. My favorites include a story about challenging the devil to an eating contest (A Reversal of Fortune), a story about the latin club causing a Bacchanalia at prom (In Vodka Verities), a tailor winning back his childhood love from the faeries (The Coat of Stars) and the titular story in which three girls are raised as tools for assassination.

My greatest disappointment with this collection was that only one of the stories took place in the Tithe universe (The Land of Heart’s Desire). It is, however, quite a good one. Corny and Roiben deal with their insecurities in love.

Holly Black’s writing is, as always, a pleasure.
