Plot: Ambrose’s father died quite suddenly before he was born and since then his mother has been very protective. After three bullies nearly kill him, he is pulled from school to be homeschooled. He is bored at first but he soon bonds with his landlord’s ex-con son over scrabble.
This is a very well written, very funny novel about words and about trust. Ambrose is a strange boy but he really grows on you, as he does on the other characters in the novel. His friendship with Cosmo, the ex-con, ex-druggie, is quite heartwarming.
For the rest of my days, I will laugh out loud when I hear the word “Labradoodle” and not just because it is a ridiculous word.
