A Rogue Librarian's Reading List

{December 30, 2010}   Soulstice by Simon Holt

Plot: Six months ago, Reggie discovered the existence of Vours, creatures that feed on fear and inhabit humans. At the Winter Solstice, a Vour took over her brother Henry. She was able to conquer her fear and save him but they are back. They are working on a way to enter humans at any moment of the year. Reggie is both the key to their plans and the only one who can stop them.

I loved the first in the series, The Devouring, and the second didn’t disappoint. Holt’s horror is all about atmosphere and broken trust. Anyone could be your enemy, even those closest to you, and your worst fears are out to get you. That is more frightening than all the gore and violence in the world.

The story is fast paced and hard to put down. I was on the edge of my seat until the very last page.

The series concludes in Fearscape which came out in October 2010.
