Plot: Elena is the only female werewolf alive today, as if just being a werewolf wasn’t hard enough. A year ago she left the pack to live a normal life with humans. And she seems to be succeeding: she has a new job, a new apartment, even a new boyfriend. And she’s convinced that she can keep her more feral nature a secret. But when people start turning up dead, apparently mauled by wild dogs, she is called back home to get to bottom of it and protect the family secret. Her return brings her face to face with her old lover Clay, a man she has very intense and very mixed feelings for. Will she be able to solve the mystery and go back to her human life?
I’m a huge fan of Armstrong’s Darkest Powers series so I had high expectations for her first novel. In some ways I was very pleased. It is a well written werewolf story and an interesting mystery. Unfortunately the romance element ruined it for me. I’ve had enough of otherwise intelligent women choosing selfish, manipulative jerks in spite of their best judgment. I’ll probably still read the rest of the series eventually, but in the meantime I’m awaiting The Reckoning with baited breath.
